Most of us have heard of it, some of us understand what it is and what it does, and those who have read “One Second After” have an idea of what will happen if we are attacked with it. Some additional info can be found at here.

The U.S. Government created a commission to study EMP and what it could do to the safety and security of the United States. Unfortunately, this Committee published its report the same day as the 911 Commission, so it didn’t get much news coverage. You can read the report at www.empcommission.org. The bottom line in the report is that it is not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ we will be hit.

EMP will take out everything electronic, whether it is connected to the grid or sitting unplugged on the kitchen counter. Things connected to the grid may fry from the 100,000 volt surge brought in through the power distribution lines.

Electronics with transistors or integrated circuits are extremely sensitive to static electricity, and can be destroyed by as little as 100 volts. Walking across a carpet and sparking to that door know is well over 1000 volts. The surge created by the EMP in your electronic device will be sufficient to destroy them if they are not protected.

One of the committee members likened EMP to a time machine, transporting our society from ‘today’ to ‘1870’ in about one second. We become, once again, an agrarian society, capable of supporting the level of population that we had in 1870. This means that there will be a lot of Americans dying.

Our goal, your goal, is to be among the survivors. There are many things that need to be done to prepare: learning survival skills, having land and gardening/preserving knowledge, and many other things.

Having communications and some of the gadgets survive could mean the difference between surviving and not surviving. Things like solar battery chargers, batteries, inverters, ignition systems for chain saws, critical farm equipment electronics, walkie-talkies, NV gear among others could be critical when the time comes.

What is EMP?

When a nuclear bomb is exploded above the atmosphere, it releases gamma rays in all directions. The ones that head towards the atmosphere strike air molecules and strip off electrons.

Those electrons and gamma rays head towards Earth, stripping even more electrons. This avalanche of electrons, called the Compton Effect, interact with the Earth’s electromagnetic field, creating very strong magnetic waves.

When a magnetic field crosses a conductor, electrical current is produced. When this EMP magnetic wave crosses power lines, electronic equipment, anything conductive, current is produced. Enough current could be produced to create fires, exploding transformers, extremely high voltage (current pushing through resistance results in voltage) which can break down insulation and create arcing and short circuits.

In 1962 the US detonated a 1.4 megaton bomb over one of the test sites in the Pacific. It was high enough that the island of Hawaii, 900 miles away, had 300 street lights go out, and some microwave links were damaged.

Hours after the detonation there were still surges and ripples in the power system. That was when we used vacuum tubes and before transistorized equipment was on the market. Today, with microcircuits and all of the very high tech equipment that we have in our homes, our factories and our defenses, we are more vulnerable than ever.

The U.S. Senate recently stripped funds for hardening the country’s power grid against EMP from a homeland security bill.

We are on our own.

What can be harmed?

Will EMP harm you? You, the human, will be safe. Magnetic waves, even very strong ones, will not harm you. MRIs use strong magnetic waves to make images of your innards.

But, look around you at anything with a wire or a chip. Whatever you see, be it toaster, TV, laptop, microwave oven, radio, chain saw, car, or truck, it is vulnerable, and the higher the technology the more vulnerable.

WSHTF you won’t need a TV, but you will need a radio, perhaps walkie-talkies, probably solar battery chargers, that ignition coil on your chain saw, maybe that night vision scope and whatever else you deem necessary for your survival. EMP won’t hurt you, but it may take away every electronic device that you posses.

If you are part of a group, you might consider building a larger box and sharing it, and the cost.

What can I do?

One way to protect your gear is to build a Faraday Shielded Box and keep your stuff in it. A faraday shield is simply a physical device that prevents electromagnetic radiation from passing, in or out. In our case, we’ll take a cardboard box, cover it with copper screening material, and then ground it well.

I’ll describe the one that I built and you can size it up or down as you think necessary. Copper screen material with wire spacing of 0.1” is needed, and is the most expensive part of the project. You can keep costs down by only making as big a box as necessary. But when you think of the cost, think of the cost of the items that you will be protecting and what it might cost you if they don’t make it.

I started with a 2’ x 2’ x 3’ cardboard box. I actually had two of them. I cut the top flaps off of one, and cut up the other to bend and fold a lid like a hat box, with about 2” of side overlap. I wanted a loose fitting top, with plenty of overlap on the sides. You don’t want any holes or gaps in the copper shielding, which is why I put the 2” flap on the lid for the box.

I laid out the screen coverage to minimize the number of lapped joints, cut the screen and used spots of hot melt glue to hold the pieces in place. I folded the screen around lips and edges, cut and tucked it into corners, and then used a very hot (150 W) soldering iron to solder all of the lap joints and corners. On the lid, not only cover the outside, but fold the screen into the underside for the side overlaps. You don’t want any missed areas of coverage of the screen.

Next, take a piece of bare #10 AWG or #12 AWG (house wiring Romex) and strip off the insulation. Form it into a loop with a pigtail. Now make a second one. Lay one on one side flap of the lid and solder the pigtail to the screen. Put the lid on the box and solder the other loop to the main box a couple of inches below the pigtail loop on the lid.

Your box is ready. Find an out of the way place where it can stay undisturbed. From the box, run a copper wire (#10 AWG) outside the house to a ground rod. You can use a ground rod of copper or galvanized steel, or you can get 10’ of ½” galvanized pipe. Drive it into the ground at least 8’, attach the copper wire to the clamp, and make sure that you always have the box and lid connected to the ground wire. At the box end of the wire, use alligator clips to conned the main wire to one of the pigtails and then make a short jumper between the two pigtails.

I haven’t finished stocking mine, but my list includes: night vision goggles, IR laser sight for the rifle, game camera, batteries, crank emergency radio, walkie-talkies, solar battery charger, 12V to 110 VAC inverter, ignition coil for the chain saw and an alternator for the tractor.

10 Things to Have Ready before the Huge EMP /empnews/2016-12-08-10-things-to-have-ready-before-the-huge-emp.html /empnews/2016-12-08-10-things-to-have-ready-before-the-huge-emp.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/empnews/2016-12-08-10-things-to-have-ready-before-the-huge-emp Dr. Peter Pry (Executive Director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security) warns that the consequences – of not being prepared for this event – are much more severe than one may think:

Article by Claude Nelson

“within a year of an EMP event at least 2 thirds or the us population will perish from starvation, disease and social collapse”

Former CIA double agent (Reza Kahlili) who spent time in the Iranian Army confirmed that the Iranian have conducted missile tests of ships in the Caspian See that are consistent with an EMP attack:

“They are going to get to the Gulf of Mexico with ballistic missiles and they can launch one at a moment’s notice and they wouldn’t care about the repercussions”

Mostly because they can sink the vessel leaving no traces and because the US won’t be able to retaliate!

What if you woke up one morning and nothing worked? What if there was no electricity? What if all transportation came to a halt?

An EMP event would instantly destroy any means of telecommunication, bank account would disappear, planes would fall from the skies, nuclear plants would not be able to cool down the reactors, we would have no running water (water pumps) and every piece of electronics we use from pacemakers to phones to gasoline pumps would stop!

Your refrigerator will stop working and all your food will spoil in a matter of days! If you and your family are not together, you won’t be able to contact or see them.

This is a catastrophic threat and North Korea, China, Russia and even ISIS… they all understand it and they are all working on it. And if they’ll ever wage war on us, they would be stupid not to strike America’s Achilles heel!

If one of the nuclear powers blasts a nuclear weapon 275 miles above the US it will produce an EMP that will basically send us, the Canadian and the Mexicans back to the Dark Ages.

Will we be able to fight back in case of a nuclear war?

I don’t think so! Probably most of our ICBM’s will turn into a pile of junk (although some are EMP hardened). The communication lines and mobiles will become useless. And on top of that, I don’t think that our ballistic missile defense (BMD) system will work at all after a powerful HEMP.

I have something you need to watch. It’s much better than I am at explaining the threat. Watch it and learn what you should fear most, what an EMP effects and how you can protect your electronics, car, mobile phones, etc.

Years ago the US Army indeed straightened some military equipment against an EMP attack. The congressional study EMP Report (back in 2004) indicated potential casualty rates of 90%. The result: the commission was disband! What the US does to prevent an EMP attack right now? NOTHING!

So here are some useful things to protect yourself from an EMP:

1. Build a Faraday Cage

A Faraday cage is a sealed enclosure that has an electrically conductive outer layer and a non-conductive inner layer. The purpose of this box is to protect any electronics inside it in case of an EMP. There are basically two simple ways of building a Faraday cage:

  • by wrapping a non-conductive box (such as cardboard or wood) in a conductive material (such as aluminum foil)
  • by using a conductive box (like an ammo can) and isolate the inner walls of the box with foam (polystyrene) or a cheap Yoga mat or maybe window insulating foam

2. Store in your Faraday Cage the most important survival electronics like:

  • A radio (for communication and gathering information);
  • An old laptop computer with downloads of ebooks and stored personal information or at least a manual on how to make a generator using materials you can find in your home;
  • A set of walkie-talkies that run on rechargeable batteries;
  • A small generator;
  • A manually rechargeable flashlight (most flashlights have electronics in them so they will also fry);
  • Electronic parts for cars;
  • Any electronic equipment you don’t use on a regular basis buy may need when SHTF like: night vision and other electronic optics, solar battery chargers, drills;

3. Store fuel

This does not mean you have to store tons of fuel. You won’t want to be seen driving around. Just a few gallons in a small tank that will allow you to conduct a few basic unpredictable operations like: bringing your family home safe or an emergency getaway car in case things get really bad in your town. (That only if you manage to protect your car against the EMP)

4. Save your car!

Basically you have 3 good options:

  • Place in the Faraday cage the vital electronics your car needs (doubles) and replace them after the EMP (PCM – Powertrain Control Module, Electronic Fuel Injection, Electronic Ignition and possibly even other parts depending on the vehicle)
  • Buy a cheap old back-up car that does not have vital electronic parts (like a 1984 Toyota Hilux 4×4 – around $1200).
  • Harden your car against EMP’s and park it in a sheet metal shed or steel building. You can also buy EMP shielding devices that zip or wrap around your car’s wiring.

5. Plan on living self-sustained

This means fulfilling all our 3 basic needs: water, food and shelter!

Have in mind a place where to procure water when there will be no running water. Have in mind a place where you can plant and harvest crops. Buying at least one acre in the countryside would give you at least something to plan with.

One of the best ways to do that is by building a system totally independent from the environment. I have something you need to watch. It’s much better than I am at explaining the threat. Watch it and learn how you can build your own independent eco-system capable of producing food in any crisis and why you should not wait.

6. Stockpile essentials like:

  • Food – for at least 5 months (winter plus two more months) – if you have a plan to go “self-sustained” and a 12 months if you don’t plan to do that. Remember that there will be no refrigeration. You’ll have a few long term food options like: Pemmican, Hardtacks, cans (more foods that will outlast you)
  • Water – This is actually the most important event for which you need to store water! Even in case of droughts people don’t die because of the lack of water (they die of hunger). But this is not the case. In case of an EMP there will be no running water, and if you are not close to a river or a fountain you may die. You need to know your location and set in your mind a walking route to a local fountain or a nearby river. If it is 3 days away (walking) it is not good. Store water for at least 10 days and head to the water source to get more water reserves starting day one.
  • Tools like an axe, a knife (learn how perfectly sharpen your knife) first aid kit and antibiotics (you won’t be able to call 911 – read more: The only 4 Antibiotics You’ll need When SHTF), personal hygiene items, boots, matches and so on.

7. Some things you should have in the car

We all spend a lot of time driving and you should not be totally surprise if an EMP gets you stuck many miles away from home on a deadly cold winter or in a desert miles away from water. Whatever the case, it doesn’t cost you anything to keep some of your equipment ready in your car:

  • warm clothing
  • long term food (some emergency food ration bars) and water (at least 1-3 gallons)
  • a fire starter
  • a knife
  • maybe a fold up bike
  • and whatever you think – depending on the distance and time of your journey;

Also… if you plan on a remote and long journey you may want to consider throwing your bug out bag into the trunk.

8. Secure Your Home against Looters

OCOKA is a military term that stands for:

  • Observation and fields of fire
  • Cover and Concealment
  • Obstacles
  • Key Terrain
  • Avenues of Approach

When setting up home defenses OCOKA should always be kept in mind and each principle addressed. Following these five key principles, you will greatly improve your security and survivability. This is one of the things that I’ve learned from a well-known army officer vet Steve Walker, for whom I have all the respect in the world. Watch his video and learn quite a few efficient and unconventional fast-tips about protecting your family in time of war or social chaos.

9. Some things you need to have at home

These things will become important valuables after an EMP:

  • When your bank account will disappear or you won’t be able to withdraw your money, you’ll be in trouble. Keep some cash and some gold (doesn’t lose value as normal currency does) at home.
  • Charcoal – you can make a lot of things with it (from water filters to gun powder)
  • Duct tape, Cable Ties and Super Glue (if you want to build or improvise something, like a simple wind generator you’ll need these)
  • Lamp oil, Candle Wax and Wicks
  • Vaseline
  • Paracord
  • Alcohol
  • Soaps

Anything you know it will be useful for you – depending on your bug out plan. (37 Things you need to hoard – Video)

10. Consider buying, making or learn how to make a simple Survival Generator

This generator has to be small enough to fit in your Faraday Cage. Some generators can be really expensive, but if you know where to look and what to buy you can get a small one for $200-$300 (1200 Watts). An electric generator using wood as fuel would be perfect. Otherwise, you should also consider storing more fuel.

If you want to save some money you can also DIY. You can try The DIY String Motor or The DIY Back-up Generator.

An EMP Attack: The Weapon That Could End Life As We Know It /empnews/2016-12-08-an-emp-attack-the-weapon-that-could-end-life-as-we-know-it.html /empnews/2016-12-08-an-emp-attack-the-weapon-that-could-end-life-as-we-know-it.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/empnews/2016-12-08-an-emp-attack-the-weapon-that-could-end-life-as-we-know-it There is one weapon that could instantaneously cause the end of the world as we know it in America – an electromagnetic pulse attack (EMP).

Article by Tara Dodrill

The Blaze TV recently focused an entire segment of the For The Record show on the ever-present dangers of an electromagnetic pulse attack – a high-intensity burst of electromagnetic energy caused by the rapid acceleration of charged particles. It would be detonated high above cities via a missile, frying the power grid.

It might sound like science fiction, but the EMP Commission, established by Congress, spent years warning DC legislators about the dangers of an EMP attack, which could cause a power grid failure and “significant damage to critical infrastructures and thus to the very fabric of US society.”

Some believe an EMP attack would cause hundreds of thousands of deaths immediately when airplanes fall from the sky due to control panel failures. Civil unrest also would occur quickly once citizens are faced with a lack of water and empty grocery stores shelves. The EMP Commission warned about both scenarios.

Senior military personnel, lawmakers, intelligence analysts and government officials believe the Obama administration is not taking the threat of an EMP attack seriously enough, according to The Blaze TV special.

Former CIA Director James Woolsey said this about electromagnetic pulse threats:

9/11 was a wake-up call that enemies of the United States were looking to launch massive attacks. What if the government in North Korea or Iran really thought that the world would be so much a better place and that they themselves would be so much more likely to go to heaven if they could just kill as many Americans as possible? These guys lust after mass destruction.

Woolsey added the federal government was not seeing the big picture clearly. The former CIA director said that both China and North Korea present problems that the United States has still not fully grasped. He considers the rogue nation of North Korea extremely dangerous.

Harness the power of the sun when the power goes out…
Heritage Foundation defense and strategic analysts urged Congress to develop, test and field US defenses against EMP attacks, including enhanced ballistic missile defenses able to counter short-range missiles which carry EMP warheads. Detonating a ballistic missile with an EMP head while still at a high altitude would allow energetic particles “released during the explosion” to “disable, damage or destroy all unhardened electronic devices within the line of sight of the detonation,” the analysts said in a report.

Another excerpt from the Heritage Foundation report about an EMP attack reads:

A rogue state would not need a long-range ballistic missile to deliver a nuclear warhead. Even short-range ballistic missiles carrying an EMP device or a nuclear warhead launched from a ship off the U.S. coast could impact millions. Today, over 30 countries, including Iran and North Korea, possess ballistic missile capabilities.

When Newt Gingrich addressed members of the House Electromagnetic Pulse Caucus, he warned those in attendance than an EMP attack could “end it all” in America. Gingrich detailed how the fallout from even a high-altitude EMP nuclear blast could destroy the power grid and a multitude of electronics on the ground in the near vicinity.

Gingrich added:

This could be the kind of catastrophe that ends civilization – and that’s not an exaggeration. The reason I began focusing on this a decade ago is there are very few events you can’t recover from. You can recover from 9/11, you can recover from Pearl Harbor. This is really different. This creates such a collapse of our fundamental productive capacity that you could literally see a civilization crash and tear itself apart fighting … internally.

The EMP Commission established by Congress warned that “an EMP attack could potentially disrupt the food infrastructure over a large region encompassing many cities for a protracted period of weeks to months.” The problems is confounded because supermarkets “typically carry only enough food to provision the local population for 1 to 3 days.” Supermarkets “replenish their stocks on virtually a daily basis from regional warehouses that usually carry enough food to supply a multi-county area for about one month.”

A domino effect, the commission said, would occur during an EMP attack:

The primary avenues for catastrophic damage to the Nation are through our electric power infrastructure and thence into our telecommunications, energy, and other infrastructures. These, in turn, can seriously impact other important aspects of our Nation’s life, including the financial system; means of getting food, water, and medical care to the citizenry; trade; and production of goods and services. The recovery of any one of the key national infrastructures is dependent on the recovery of others.

Do you think the United States should do more to prevent an EMP attack and a scenario often known as a TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) event?

EMP Attack Would Destroy Civilization: “A Nightmare You’ll Never Wake Up From” /empnews/2016-12-08-emp-attack-would-destroy-civilization-a-nightmare-youll-never-wake-up-from.html /empnews/2016-12-08-emp-attack-would-destroy-civilization-a-nightmare-youll-never-wake-up-from.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/empnews/2016-12-08-emp-attack-would-destroy-civilization-a-nightmare-youll-never-wake-up-from It could all be over tomorrow. A truly modern threat.

Article by Mac Slavo

The threat of an EMP – via natural event or deliberate attack – remains a grave one. Its potential as a WMD looms larger than any other weapons known to man.

Due to the dependency of modern society on electricity, supply chains and cities, an electromagnetic pulse wave  poses a threat that really could kill or cripple 90% of the population.

It is a system wide reset that few are prepared for.

As WND reported:

Think this couldn’t happen in today’s America?

Think again, says former Defense Department security policy analyst and WND national security writer Michael Maloof. All it would take is an EMP attack to knock out all “life-sustaining critical infrastructure.”

[…]

“And if the electrical grid system is knocked out, it affects everything that depends upon that electrical grid. It could include our telecommunications, our banking and finance systems, our petroleum and natural gas transportation systems, our food and water delivery systems, our emergency services. It also affects all of the automated control devices that we take for granted every day, like the automatic control of lights, our surge system.”

He added, “It would be a nightmare you’ll never wake up from.”

The impact on life supporting-medical devices alone would be devastating to millions of people in the population.

It is a stark reminder that all the high technology of this world has been built on a fragile and very vulnerable foundation.

Such an event would also render hospitals unable to help their patients, as they rely on electronics. People with pacemakers or other electrical-based medical devices would suddenly lose their source of life.

“One thing people don’t really talk about is the impact it would have on nuclear reactors,” added Maloof, who wrote about the EMP threat in his book “A Nation Forsaken.” “When you look at what happened in Fukushima in Japan a few years ago with just one reactor, the impact on something like 147 nuclear reactors we have in the United States could be not only catastrophic, but cataclysmic.”

As SHTF has reported numerous times before, these effects could be minimalized if the government worked with the private sector to reinforce the grid, and protect critical infrastructure.

The problem is that this is very expensive, the grid is very old, and the powers-thatbe are much more likely to capitalize on the fear and horror after an event has already taken place… rather than simply resolve the issue with proper shielding.

Of course, that may change. But will it be too late?

The military has moved many of its vital operations, equipment and contingency forces back to Cheyenne Mountain to reinforce the continuity of their operations; numerous government agencies have taken similar measures.

But the vast majority of the population remain dangerously unprotected. Self-reliant individuals can, however, prepare for life off the grid, and even protect backup electronics in a homemade Faraday cage, as SHTF previously reported:

“Island yourself” from the central grid… that’s former FERC chief John Wellinghoff’s advice to individuals – preppers if you will – for surviving any grid downs that could occur from an EMP, a cyber attack or other event powerful enough to interrupt the highly vulnerable primary grid.

People are beginning to understand that they need their own onsite capabilities to island themselves from the grid. That’s because the grid’s external vulnerabilities will continue to be a problem until we do have substantial amounts of distributed generation. I have a solar photovoltaic system that provides 100% of my power needs. I am looking into how I can island myself off the grid. But it is not just me, the military is moving toward micro-grids at all of their bases because they understand the vulnerability of those bases to outages.

EMP Reality Check: Can You Survive Without Technology? /empnews/2016-12-08-emp-reality-check-can-you-survive-without-technology.html /empnews/2016-12-08-emp-reality-check-can-you-survive-without-technology.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/empnews/2016-12-08-emp-reality-check-can-you-survive-without-technology Imagine a world where there is no technology. Not because you’ve traveled back in time to the 1800’s but because someone has attacked America’s electric grid. Cell phones and computers don’t work. But that’s the least of your problems.

Article by Shane S.

  • Power is out everywhere. Hospitals are no longer functional.
  • Food is limited and will probably last only a few months – if you’re lucky.
  • Trash and waste build up and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Disease spreads like wildfire. It’s not a nightmare.

It’s possible, and if it happens could you survive?

What is an EMP

An electromagnetic pulse, EMP, is a short disturbance of electromagnetic energy, either from a man-made or natural occurrence. An EMP can be damaging to all kinds of electronic equipment, and if it is powerful enough, it can even damage structures or buildings. This makes it the perfect choice for a technological terrorist attack.

I first heard about EMPs when I read One Second After, by William R. Forstchen. It’s an excellent book and really brings the scenario to life. I highly recommend you check it out if you haven’t read it.

A big enough EMP attack could wipe out power indefinitely. And could potentially be the end of our country as we know it. Most EMP’s affect a relatively small area, an attack could affect northern states from Maine to Wisconsin for example.

Although that may seem like a large area, a solar flare could easily affect double the area. However, if three EMP attacks targeted different parts of America at the same time the whole country could be affected at once.

The dangers of an EMP attack

The most obvious and initial dangers of an EMP attack would be for anyone relying and machines to live. For example, anyone on life support would die immediately or soon after the attack. Fires would break out everywhere due to surges. People traveling on airplanes would also be in danger of the plane crashing due to the loss of technology.

Those who do survive would have to quickly learn how to no longer depend on technology for everything. They would have to find new ways to cook, and new ways of keeping their family safe from harm. Prisoners would be able to break out of jails all over the country, and people would resort to stealing, looting and violence for any food or first-aid available.

Almost anything can happen

The most dangerous issue of an EMP though is the fact that anything can happen. No matter how much planning we do, or how many precautions we take, we just can’t know for sure what would happen in this scenario.

Preparing for an EMP

The best defense is a good offense as they say, and the best way to survive an EMP is to be prepared.

Faraday cage for electronics

You could try to build a massive lead structure, but as you can imagine, it isn’t very practical. The first thing you should do to prepare for an EMP is get a Faraday cage for any important electronics. This is a cage made of conductive material which can block electric fields, so electronic devices stored here would still work after an EMP.

You can make your own basic Faraday cage with heavy duty aluminum foil. It’s recommend you wrap an item in at least three layers of foil to make sure it is protected. Keep in mind however, this is a very rudimentary example and might not work in a massive EMP attack.

For greater protection, wrap the items in foil, then place them in some sort of container, such as a shoe box, wrap that box in three layers of foil and finally place the box in an aluminum trashcan or other container. It may seem like overkill now, but should an EMP occur, you’ll be glad you took this precaution.

Faraday cages can also be purchased in several stores or online. If you want the best protection for your essential electronics, and don’t mind paying a lot, consider this option. You can also use a radiation blocking material like tungsten radiation shielding.

A few suggestions of items to protect are, an old, but still working, cell phone, a laptop, a small portable stove, a radio. Just think about technical items you would most need in a blackout or other emergency and put those in.

Have cash on hand

Be sure to always keep some cash on hand, in a secure but easily retrievable location. Once the power is out, credit cards won’t work. And if you have stashed your cash in an electronic safe, you’re out of luck once again.

Remember though, after an EMP, cash will lose it’s value very quickly, as many people will start stealing or looting. Go to a store and get as much as you can as quickly as you can. Food, bottled water, extra blankets and even supplies for cooking without electricity are all things you should already have, but it wouldn’t hurt to stock up on at this point.

Be ready to collect water

Water is needed for so many daily activities, so you’ll want to have as much of it on hand as possible. Fill everything up you can think of, sinks, tubs, glasses, pots and pans. This will be used for not only cooking but washing as well. You should also have plenty of bottled water on hand too to use for drinking water.

Eventually, sewer and water plants will stop working, if they work at all after the attack, and you will need all the clean, fresh water you can get.

Get set up with solar

Solar equipment, such as a solar powered stove, can be extremely useful after an EMP, but keep in mind, if it’s not stored in your Faraday cage it will be as useless to you as your other electronics. Keep this in mind when making or purchasing the cage, and be sure it will hold everything you wish to protect.

What if you’re in your car?

Don’t forget, you could be anywhere when an EMP occurs, work, home, vacation, or even in the car. Make sure you have survival equipment within reach no matter where you are, by keeping supplies in your car as well as your home.

Always keep nonperishable food and a few bottles of water in your car, along with a first aid kit, and a few blankets. It’s also a good idea to have a good pair of shoes for each person in your family in the car, incase for any reason you must stop driving and travel on foot. Make sure your car is well maintained and running smoothly, you never know when a five minute drive could turn into a longer journey. Other important items to always have with you are, a knife, a metal container for cooking/boiling water, and a fire starter.

Be Ready to Bug Out

Any semi populated city or metropolis will be in a pure panic. Remember the situation in New Orleans with Katrina in 2005. So, there is no reason not to plan for a possible bug out scenario. An EMP is literally one of the times you may want to get out of town.

If you are in a rural setting, you may be able to buckle down and bug in. You won’t have to deal with the riots, looting, and chaos. That said, in the days after an EMP, you may find some of the urban population bugging out from the city. If you have enough land and resources, you can consider setting up a camp as a charity of sorts. The people that made it all the way to your homestead probably have some survival and planning skills that may be valuable.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to prevent an EMP attack, but you can be prepared. Keep these tips in mind and you will be well on your way to surviving one of the potentially most harmful and damaging attack in existence.

Our entire way of life can be ended in a single day.  And it wouldn’t even take a nuclear war to do it.  All it would take for a rogue nation or terror organization to bring us to our knees is the explosion of a couple well-placed nuclear devices high up in our atmosphere.  The resulting electromagnetic pulses would fry electronics from coast to coast.  Of course this could also be accomplished without any attack.  Scientists tell us that massive solar storms have hit our planet before, and that it is inevitable that there will be more in the future.  As you will read about below, the most recent example of this was “the Carrington Event” in 1859.  If a similar burst from the sun hit us today, experts tell us that life in America could suddenly resemble life in the 1800s, and the economic damage caused could potentially be in the trillions of dollars.  This is one of the greatest potential threats that we are facing as a nation, and yet Barack Obama has essentially done nothing to get us prepared.

Article by TheEconomicCollapseBlog

The technology necessary to conduct such an electromagnetic pulse attack against the United States has become much more accessible in recent years.  According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, even rogue nations such as North Korea and Iran either already have or will soon have the capability to hurt us in this way…

Rogue nations such as North Korea (and possibly Iran) will soon match Russia and China and have the primary ingredients for an EMP attack: simple ballistic missiles such as Scuds that could be launched from a freighter near our shores; space-launch vehicles able to loft low-earth-orbit satellites; and simple low-yield nuclear weapons that can generate gamma rays and fireballs.

If a successful, large scale EMP attack ever did take place, it would be a catastrophe beyond anything that the United States has ever seen before.  The EMP Commission, which was established by Congress, says that it is likely that most of us would end up dead

What would a successful EMP attack look like? The EMP Commission, in 2008, estimated that within 12 months of a nationwide blackout, up to 90% of the U.S. population could possibly perish from starvation, disease and societal breakdown.

In 2009 the congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States, whose co-chairmen were former Secretaries of Defense William Perry and James Schlesinger, concurred with the findings of the EMP Commission and urged immediate action to protect the electric grid. Studies by the National Academy of Sciences, the Department of Energy, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the National Intelligence Council reached similar conclusions.

If you are a terrorist, a dictator or a fanatic that is looking for a “killshot” for the United States, those kinds of numbers would certainly get your attention.

And it was recently reported by WND that the Iranian military has already been playing around with such a scenario…

Peter Vincent Pry, who is executive director of a congressional advisory group called the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, raised the alarm as the agreement is about to be finalized.

He said U.S. military officials have confirmed such an Iranian plan.

“Iranian military documents describe such a scenario – including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States,” Pry wrote in a recent column in Israel’s main online media network, Aruz Sheva.

“Iran with a small number of nuclear missiles can by EMP attack threaten the existence of modernity and be the death knell of Western principles of international law, humanism and freedom,” he said.

Very chilling stuff.

And of course there are many, many others out there that would love to see the U.S. taken down other than just the Iranians.

Meanwhile, our power grid is far more vulnerable than most Americans would dare to imagine.

In previous articles, I discussed a recent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission report which stated the following…

“Destroy nine interconnection substations and a transformer manufacturer and the entire United States grid would be down for at least 18 months, probably longer.”

Are you starting to get the picture?

Our entire way of life depends upon electricity.  If you take away that electricity, our society is transformed literally overnight.

A successful EMP would be an utter nightmare for this nation.  Just consider what U.S. Representative Scott Perry had to say about a potential attack last year

The consequences of such an attack could be catastrophic; all electronics, power systems, and information systems could be shut down,” Rep. Scott Perry said in prepared remarks during an EMP hearing in May held by the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security. “This could then cascade into interdependent infrastructures such as water, gas, and telecommunications. While we understand this is an extreme case, we must always be prepared in case a rogue state decides to utilize this technology.”

In essence, suddenly nothing would work and just about everything that we take for granted would suddenly be gone.

In a previous article, I spelled out some of the implications of such an event…

-There would be no heat for your home.
-Water would no longer be pumped into most homes.
-Your computer would not work.
-There would be no Internet.
-Your phones would not work.
-There would be no television.
-There would be no radio.
-ATM machines would be shut down.
-There would be no banking.
-Your debit cards and credit cards would not work.
-Without electricity, most gas stations would not be functioning.
-Most people would be unable to do their jobs without electricity and employment would collapse.
-Commerce would be brought to a standstill.
-Hospitals would not be able to function normally.
-You would quickly start running out of medicine.
-All refrigeration would shut down and frozen foods in our homes and supermarkets would start to go bad.

And as I mentioned above, all of this can happen even without an attack.

A direct hit from a major solar storm can cause the exact same thing.

In fact, NASA says that there is a 12 percent chance that such a storm will hit us during the next ten years…

NASA is warning that there’s a 12 percent chance an extreme solar storm will hit Earth in the next decade, sending out massive shock waves that would knock out grids across the world.

The economic impact of this doomsday scenario could exceed $2 trillion — or 20 times the cost of Hurricane Katrina, according to the National Academy of Sciences.

In recent years, we have been really lucky.

There was a close call in 2012 and another one in 2013.

The following is an excerpt from an upcoming book that I have co-authored with Barbara Fix that will soon be published entitled “Get Prepared Now”…

Most people have absolutely no idea that the Earth barely missed being fried by a massive EMP burst from the sun in 2012 and in 2013. And earlier in 2014 there was another huge solar storm which would have caused tremendous damage if it had been directed at our planet. If any of those storms would have directly hit us, the result would have been catastrophic. Electrical transformers would have burst into flames, power grids would have gone down and much of our technology would have been fried. In essence, life as we know it would have ceased to exist – at least for a time. These kinds of solar storms have hit the Earth many times before, and experts tell us that it is inevitable that it will happen again. The most famous one happened in 1859, and was known as the Carrington Event. But other than the telegraph, humanity had very little dependence on technology at the time. If another Carrington Event happened today, it would be a complete and utter nightmare. A study by Lloyd’s of London has concluded that it would have taken a $2,600,000,000,000 chunk out of the global economy, and it would take up to a decade to repair the damage. Unfortunately, scientists insist that it is going to happen at some point. The only question is when.

So keep an eye on the sun.

The giant ball of fire that we revolve around has started to behave very erratically, and it has the power to end our way of life at any time.

In fact, scientists tell us that we are about to get hit with a “glancing blow” on April 7th…

A filament of magnetism stretching halfway across the sun erupted during the late hours of April 4th (22:00-23:00 UT). The eruption split the sun’s atmosphere, hurling a CME into space and creating a “canyon of fire,” shown in a movie recorded by the Solar Dynamics Observatory: The glowing walls of the canyon trace the original channel where the filament was suspended by magnetic forces above the sun’s surface. From end to end, the structure stretches more than 300,000 km–a real Grand Canyon.

Fragments of the exploding filament formed the core of a CME that raced away from the sun at approximately 900 km/s (2 million mph): image. Most of the CME will miss Earth, but not all. The cloud is expected to deliver a a glancing blow to our planet’s magnetic field could on April 7th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

The event of April 7th is not going to cause us major problems.  But someday there will be a solar storm that will.

Personally, I cannot even imagine what life would be like without electricity.

Because we have become so deeply dependent on technology, most of us would have absolutely no idea how to live without it.

An electromagnetic pulse attack would be one of the fastest ways to cripple America and end the dominance of the United States in world affairs.  And in this day and age, there are hundreds of millions of people around the planet that would love to see that happen.

So to not take steps to protect our power grid from such an attack is very foolish.  But that is precisely what Barack Obama (and presidents before him) have chosen to do.  We have technology which would mitigate the damage from an electromagnetic pulse, but rather than spend the money Obama has decided to just hope that it will never happen.

Up to this point, we have been fortunate.

But someday, our luck may run out.

SOURCES: EMP attack to be unleashed on America to stop election if Trump looks likely to win /empnews/2016-10-11-sources-emp-attack-to-be-unleashed-on-america-to-stop-election-if-trump-looks-likely-to-win.html /empnews/2016-10-11-sources-emp-attack-to-be-unleashed-on-america-to-stop-election-if-trump-looks-likely-to-win.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/empnews/2016-10-11-sources-emp-attack-to-be-unleashed-on-america-to-stop-election-if-trump-looks-likely-to-win There have been many dire predictions – mainly from the political Left – about what would happen in the U.S. and the world if Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump beats his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, next month.

Financial ruin. Loss of U.S. allies. Stock market collapse. And now, an electromagnetic pulse attack on our country that would throw us back to the 18th century in terms of technology.

As noted by Dave Hodges of The Common Sense Show, four separate sources have contacted him in recent days with some shocking observations and predictions, all of which appear to add up to one thing: A Trump victory would lead to a catastrophic attack on our country, perhaps using an EMP weapon.

One source who works at a nuclear power plant told Hodges that “Palo Verde Unit 2 tripped” one night just recently, meaning it went from 100 percent power to 0 percent. And while that one incident wasn’t particularly newsworthy, the source went on to say that U-1 and U-3 units tripped at different times during the previous two weeks. That’s bizarre, the source said, because “these units will normally run ‘breaker to breaker’ with NO issues at all,” adding they run for 18 straight months without problems.

A second source who also works at a nuclear plant speculated that officials with the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA and the North American Electric Reliability Corp. may believe that a “grid down scenario” is coming because the premise of the plant inspection was to find out how long the facility could continue cooling its fuel rods without power before a meltdown began. The answer: 10 days – an answer that “scared the hell out of them.”

The third source, Gary Haevin, the producer of Amerigedon, told Hodges on a recent program of the EMP event (interview can be accessed here; the EMP discussion begins around the 10:00 mark). Haevin said he knows someone very influential in the Trump campaign and that they’ve been told the globalists would unleash an EMP attack to stop the election from taking place if it looks like the GOP nominee will win. “Trump is a real threat to their world order, and I don’t think they’re going to allow it to happen,” Haevin said.

Finally, a fourth source – a former military commander – said directly that an EMP attack was definitely a consideration if it looks like Trump can beat Clinton in just a few short weeks. “He said an EMP attack was still very much on the table and that we are looking at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and DHS preparing to strengthen the defense of our nuclear power plants. He said they have stepped up the plants ability to maintain cooling capabilities in case of an EMP attack,” Hodges wrote on his web site.

Obama just handed Iran the weapon it needs to destroy America with an EMP attack /empnews/2016-06-21-obama-just-handed-iran-the-weapon-it-needs-to-destroy-america-with-an-emp-attack.html /empnews/2016-06-21-obama-just-handed-iran-the-weapon-it-needs-to-destroy-america-with-an-emp-attack.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/empnews/2016-06-21-obama-just-handed-iran-the-weapon-it-needs-to-destroy-america-with-an-emp-attack If you’ve ever read the Saul Alinsky book, “Rules for Radicals,” then you can begin to understand how a man like Barack Obama can, as president, do the things he does to harm America’s interests in the short- and long-term, because the book is essentially a blueprint for hate-filled discontent and change of the existing social and cultural order of the United States.

If you’ve read the book, then, you can understand why Obama, as president, would provide one of our sworn enemies a military capability that could not only damage the existing social and cultural order of the United States, but kill many of its citizens at the same time.

Enter the “Iran nuclear deal.”

First, some background.

As reported by Prepper Fortress, the White House and its sycophantic cult followers in the State Department and Cabinet have all argued that the deal is the best solution to the long-simmering angst between Washington and Tehran, which of course does not explain why Obama thought it was necessary to cut a nuclear deal or any deal with the Iranians in the first place (a question no one else is asking).

But here’s the thing that even the administration admits: The deal doesn’t permanently stop Iran from getting the technology to build its own weapons; rather, it merely kicks the can down the road to a time when, presumably, Obama and his family will have made enough money from post-presidency book and speaking deals to live somewhere far away from the United States.

“A credible alternative to this dangerous deal with Iran is to maintain U.S. and U.N. sanctions (or unilateral U.S. sanctions if necessary), keep the military option on the table, and work with partners in the Middle East to force Tehran to accept much tighter restrictions on its nuclear plans,” Prepper Fortress notes which is, of course, spot-on, since serious diplomats (not politically compromised ones like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her replacement, former Sen. John Kerry) have all said those sanctions were severely hampering the Iranians’ nuclear development and economy overall.

“The Vienna Agreement represents a Faustian bargain in which the Obama Administration agreed to dismantle sanctions and legitimize Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for temporary restrictions on uranium enrichment, greater (but still limited) access for U.N. inspectors and promises to comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)—promises that Tehran has repeatedly broken in the past,” the site continued. “If Iran reneges on the agreement, as it could easily do since most of its concessions are quickly reversible, the international sanctions regime will be almost impossible to put back in place.”

The deal, such as it is, gives Iran access to tens of billions of dollars that were previously frozen, and, after 15 years supposedly, the limitations on Iran’s uranium enrichment capacity are lifted and Tehran can move enrichment activities outside of the Natanz facility and scale it up by several factors, thus giving Iran the ability and resources to sort of sprint to the finish line in developing nuclear weapons with the capacity to deliver them.

Retired Navy Adm. James “Ace” Lyons said in a recent Fox News interview that is when the real danger to the United States would start.

“This deal is a total sellout,” Lyons said. “But of course, for Secretary Kerry, he has no problem with this since this is the second time he has sold out his country.

“This deal goes beyond the pale,” Lyons continued. “Every objective we set out to accomplish we conceded to Iran. In fact, we went beyond that. We went put in things which I could not even imagine, where we’re going to show them out to protect their facilities, their nuclear program, and prevent it from being sabotaged.

“This is mind-boggling,” he said, adding that the White House did nothing to curb Iran’s ICBM program. “As far as further endangering our national security, you have to look at what Iran has done, and how to conduct an electromagnetic, EMP, attack.”

Such an attack would knock out much of the U.S. power grid, likely for several months to a year, leading to massive casualties and unbridled social chaos, experts have said.

The day the electric grid died /empnews/2016-04-20-the-day-the-electric-grid-died.html /empnews/2016-04-20-the-day-the-electric-grid-died.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/empnews/2016-04-20-the-day-the-electric-grid-died (Bugout.news) Of all the “nightmare” scenarios that are entirely plausible – not the far-out conspiracies, but situations that could actually happen – the one that most unsettles people is loss of the nation’s power grid.

Whether that loss occurred due to a cyberattack, massive grid failure due to overuse, or the worst of this worst nightmare – loss from a massive solar flare or EMP attack, which would literally take years to recover from – life without electricity will quickly become deadly.

Consider what is occurring daily now in the socialist ‘paradise’ of Venezuela. Throughout the country, power outages are so common that some villages and cities only have it for a short time each day. Outages are very common at night, and that’s when the trouble starts: Without power and lighting, crime has soared.

Think about what happens in the United States immediately after major cities lose power: There is widespread looting and other criminal activity; anyone caught on the street is in danger of being robbed and killed; police and emergency services are so overwhelmed they don’t even respond to many calls for help because they just don’t have the personnel. And all this after just a few days without power. Extrapolate that out several months or years and you can begin to see just how nightmarish life would become.

“There are so many different scenarios,” disaster author James Rawles has noted. “You know there’s a fake scenario, there’s a global war scenario, nuclear war scenarios – there’s so many different things that can go wrong and any number of different reasons why life as we know it could cease very quickly.”

Quickly, indeed. Based on various experts whose opinion we culled, this is some of what we can expect immediately following a massive outage of power, especially once people begin to understand that the problem won’t be fixed anytime soon:

— You can count on the fact that widespread looting will begin, and it is even likely to include people who would have otherwise never stolen a thing in their lives. With that said there is one caveat: It’s entirely possible that the bulk of looting will be, oddly enough, electronics stores and places were people can steal “stuff” – but if you’re planning on getting while the getting is good (which, honestly, you shouldn’t have to because you’re already prepared for this – right?), try a food store. Looters en masse will eventually get around to figuring out they need to secure their next couple of meals at least, and you’re likely to encounter some people already at the grocery store, but the mindset most people have is that the power will be back on soon so “stuff” is a priority over food.

“Once you get past about 500 people [in a city], it really becomes unmanageable, especially with no radio communications and no phones to think that you can pull together as a community,” Rawles says. “Once you lose that sense of community, it’s basically every man for himself. I think people will go kind of Mad Max in an absolute worst case with the power grid down.”

— The time of year will matter. If it summertime, lack of electricity will create a number of health crises – heat stroke, people consuming food that rotted without them realizing it, the spread of disease among rotting corpses on the street (and there will many), and so forth.

“If it were to happen mid-winter we’d actually see more people dying of exposure, dying of the cold, than we would of dying of disease, especially in the Eastern United States and the Northeast,” Rawles says.

“It doesn’t take too long a period before blankets are insufficient – people don’t have any alternate source of heat they’ll be freezing to death in large numbers. Then what happens in the next spring when everything thaws out? Then you have a really big public health crisis because not only are you worried about human waste – you’re also worried about thousands upon thousands of unburied bodies.”

— When the electric grid goes down, it means there won’t be any running water shortly thereafter. So knowing where to get clean water, having your own water supply, or having the ability to sanitize it is vital.

— As mentioned above, food will be pretty much cleaned out within an alarming short period of time. This is what makes your long-term storage food supply so vital. [And oh, by the way, are you prepared to defend it or, if you can’t, do you have a bugout plan?]

— Basic infrastructure no longer functions. Besides water supply, this includes waste disposal, the financial sector, communications, mass transit, and air travel.

— The “Internet of things” will become a quaint, historical slogan.

— Emergency services will be quickly overwhelmed and may disappear altogether. Police – those who even show up to work – will be outnumbered and outgunned. The same will be true for available National Guard soldiers (again, those who report for duty – many won’t because they won’t want to leave their families). Some Guard and Reserve may hole up at armories because they have arms, food, water and shelter – but they will eventually be besieged with masses of people looking for assistance. The same will be true of fire and police stations.

— Scores of patients in hospitals will die, the most critical first. Hospital staff will begin to decline steadily as well, as more doctors, nurses and support personnel – figuring they’re not going to be paid anyway – will abandon posts in what will become a vain attempt to survive. Some will remain behind, but only as long as the food, water and medicines last.

In short, life as we know it will cease to exist. In fact, government officials and experts have said that as many as half of all Americans – roughly 155 million people – would die within two weeks without power.

And honestly, this could happen at any time. Are you ready?

North Korean satellite currently in the precise position to launch a nation-killing EMP attack against the United States /empnews/2016-01-12-north-korea-is-orbiting-a-satellite-over-the-usa-in-the-precise-position-to-launch-a-nation-killing-emp-weapon-from-space.html /empnews/2016-01-12-north-korea-is-orbiting-a-satellite-over-the-usa-in-the-precise-position-to-launch-a-nation-killing-emp-weapon-from-space.html#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/empnews/2016-01-12-north-korea-is-orbiting-a-satellite-over-the-usa-in-the-precise-position-to-launch-a-nation-killing-emp-weapon-from-space North Korea’s KMS-3 satellite has been passing over the United States almost everyday for several weeks now. Dubbed by one expert as the “problem from hell,” the satellite continues to drift over America from the south, an area said to be particularly vulnerable to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack. In wake of North Korea’s proclamation that it has successfully conducted a Hydrogen Bomb test last week, U.S. troops are now on high alert.

The satellite is flying at a height of 300 kilometers, the perfect altitude for North Korea to launch an EMP attack that could wipe out 90 percent of the U.S. population in two years.

You can track the satellite using the SATFARE website.(1)

North Korea nuclear warhead masks the facade of a satellite

The reverberations of an EMP attack over American soil would be absolutely devastating, as explained by Ted Koppel in his book Lights OutA Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath:

“Without ready access to electricity, we are thrust back into another age – an age in which many of us would lack the resources and experience necessary to survive. Precisely how that happens is, ultimately, less important than how we prepared we are for the consequences. It would be reassuring to report that the grid is adequately defended against cyber attacks. It is not.”

Now, such technology may be in the hands of North Korea. And there’s good reason to believe this might really be the case. Back in 2004, members of the Congressional EMP Commission met with two Russian generals regarded as the country’s leading experts in EMP technology. The generals disclosed that the Russians had a “Super EMP warhead,” and that the information necessary to build the weapon may have been leaked to North Korea.

Alarmingly, the United States’ Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMD) would be rendered useless against an EMP triggered by a simple nuclear weapon in a satellite as small as KMS -3.

EMP attack from the south renders U.S. radar systems useless

According to the Russian generals, BMDs are ineffective against an EMP attack because of an approach known as a “fractional orbit bombardment system.” This method involves launching a satellite from the south, instead of on an arching ballistic trajectory of the North Pole. Since the U.S. doesn’t have Ballistic Missile Early Warning Radars or missile interceptors facing that way, the satellite can blindside North America by attacking it from the south.

In other words, the United States’ defense system is not focused on the Southern Hemisphere. But even if it were, it still wouldn’t be able to tell if KMS-3 harbored a small nuclear weapon, which could be detonated at any time.

The KMS -3 satellite routinely passes over the U.S. from the southern blind spot at a trajectory and altitude that could place an EMP field over 48 of the 50 states. That is, of course, if KSM-3 really were a small nuclear warhead under the guise of a satellite.

According to Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, Executive Director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and Director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, the Hydrogen bomb North Korea claims to have recently tested meets all the criteria of a “Super EMP,” which would plunge America hundreds of years back and decimate the electrical grid over a massive portion of the country.

According to Pry, the U.S. is not completely defenseless against such an attack. However, we should never be complacent.

Let’s just continue to hope that North Korea isn’t up to its old shenanigans with the KMS-3 satellite.
